2009 Emmy Tapes

August 4, 2009

I know a few of you already saw this, but just catching up here.

Because of the new format to the Emmys, actors didn’t submit individual tapes to be judged until after they received nominations.  In other words, once nomined nominees then picked a tape to represent themselves that voters will watch to judge.  (Series in the Outstanding Series race get to pick 3 tapes of 2 episodes each for 6 episodes total.)

Here’s what 30 Rock picked out:

Outstanding Comedy Series:
(Voters receive 2 out of the 3 tapes randomlyfor each series.)
Tape 1: “Believe in the Stars” & “Reunion”
Tape 2: “Christmas Special” & “Generalissimo”
Tape 3: “Apollo, Apollo” & “Mama Mia”

Lead Actress:
Tina Fey – “Reunion”

Lead Actor:
Alec Baldwin – “Generalissimo”

Supporting Actress:
Jane Krakowski – “The Ones”

Supporting Actor:
Tracy Morgan – “The Funcooker”
Jack McBrayer – “The Bubble”

Pretty good submissions.  I’ll discuss what I think of them in the comments.  Feel free to do the same.

Here’s a list of most of the submissions in the major categories.  (Thanks Noah.)

Series: The Reunion + Believe in the Stars tape is just fantastic. Voters receiving that tape will be sold.
Christmas Special and Generalissimo is alright as well.
I’m a fan of Apollo, Apollo but I’d have liked to see it paired up with “Jackie Jormp-Jomp” or “Retreat to Move Forward” instead of Mama Mia.

Tina – Reunion is a strong episode. Even though she was funnier in Retreat to Move Forward, I think Reunion shows a different side, even a bit of a darker side to Liz. That will help in her face off vs the extremely talented Mary Louise Parker and Toni Collette who are coming at her with darker more dramatic roles.

Alec – Generalissimo is my #1 pick for him. The scene where he’s talking to himself as the Generalissimo is just money. Steve Carrell will be some competition for him. But I like both Steve and Alec so I’m glad they’re front runners.

Jane – The Ones is a pretty average episode for Jane. She doesn’t get a lot of screen time but delivers every bit of material perfectly so she’s still in the race. I think she has a shot considering Amy and Kristen will be tough for voters to choose between.

Tracy and Jack submitted perfectly. Jack was particularly hilarious in The Bubble though he’s in the subplot. I don’t think they’ll hold up to Neil Patrick Harris though.

Definitely agree about Reunion and Believe in the Stars. Two best episodes of the season in my opinion. Disappointed by the second tape. Christmas Special and Generalissimo were two of the weakest episodes for me. Would have LOVED to see Jackie Jormp-Jomp. [Shout out to Weeds and HIMYM for finally making the cut. HUGE shout out to Flight of the Conchords! Also for the only non-30 Rock writing nod.]

I agree about Tina’s episode. I have to wonder if she thought about Weeds and Tara while deciding. And I have to be honest here and say that I think Toni or Mary-Louise will win this year. I might be totally off, in which case I will eat crow and never doubt Tina ever again. [You have to admit that Toni in particular is fantastic.]

Alec’s episode was a bit of a duh. Good duh, though. Like Rosemary’s Baby was last year. And seriously, I think he’ll win again. I mean Jim Parsons was nominated, which shows how weak the category is. [Shout out to Jemaine Clement for proving everyone wrong! Love Flight of the Conchords!]

Jane. Jane Jane Jane. Yes. Yes yes yes. The End. [Seriously though, I adore Kristen Wiig, and I'm so happy she got a nod. But seriously, Jane needs to win, and I think she just might.] [Oh, and Kristin Chenoweth. Pushing Daisies may be dead, but that's not stopping Kristin apparently (: ]

Tracy and Jack had the unfortunate distinction of being awesome, but not having standout episodes to me. They both chose relatively well, but I also think NPH has this one. [Shout out to the voters for shunning Jeremy Piven.]

And as far as dramas go [who should win, just for fun]:

Drama Series – Breaking Bad [Mad Men a close second]
Actor – Bryan Cranston, Breaking Bad
Actress – Elisabeth Moss, Mad Men
Supp. Actor – Aaron Paul, Mad Men
Supp. Actress – Chandra Wilson or Sandra Oh, Grey’s Anatomy [Hate the show, but seriously. Sandra's been nominated five years in a row now.]
Directing – Phil Abraham, Mad Men [The Jet Set]
Writing – Cuse and Lindelof, Lost [The Incident]

[And by 'Aaron Paul, Mad Men,' I meant 'Aaron Paul, Breaking Bad.' Silly Noah.]

@Noah: “I mean Jim Parsons was nominated, which shows how weak the category is” YOU DID NOT JUST SAY THAT?!

Regarding the submissions, I’m pretty pleased. I’m really glad that Believe In The Stars was submitted, one of the best episodes for sure.

    Noah Says:

Okay then, Charlie Sheen/Tony Shalhoub was nominated which shows how weak the category is. Better? :)

I’m a little too hard on Big Bang Theory. At least Jim isn’t a ridiculous repeat nominee like Sheen or Shalhoub.

I have mixed feelings about the various episodes that were submitted for the series and individually.

Totally agree that Believe in the Stars & Reunion is a fantastic pairing. I feel that the pairing of Christmas Special & Generalissimo are weak together but do showcase two of the Guest Stars nominated i.e. Elaine and Jon. Generalissimo also give extra espouse to Alec and was an awesome choice for him. I feel that Jim Parsons picked the wrong episode he was ten times funnier in “The Panty Pinata Polarization” then “Bath Gift Hypothesis”

Apollo,Apollo is the best episode of the year but I wish they would have submitted it with Retreat to Move Forward. Because that episode was full of win.

Tina episode was solid and when going up against Toni and Mary she totally picked the right episode. However, I feel that Toni will win this year and Tina will receive an emmy for her Sarah Palin impression. Because lets face it, it was pure brilliance on her part.

I’m so happy that Jane got nominated and “The Ones” is a pretty awesome episode especially her monologue. “I’m sorry, but I am not a monster. I’m just a girl standing in front of a boy she’s poisoned. So this other boy would go to town on her.” Epic!

Tracy Morgan and Jack McBrayer are awesome but I feel like NPH will finally get his emmy this year.

LOL Noah, that’s a lot better. Thanks for that =D. I agree with you pythiaprophet regarding Jim’s choice of episode, I watched the Panty Pinata Polarization yesterday and it’s easily his best work. I hope he stands a chance at least. Okay that’s enough Big Bang Theory talk for one post methinks lol.

I’m really rooting for Jane to win in her category, but I think if I were choosing for her I would have chosen Jackie Jormp Jormp, she’s particularly good in that.

@ David. Just re watched Jackie Jormp Jormp and I can’t understand why she didn’t’ submit that. Its hilarious. I kinda wish they would let the actors pick two episodes to showcase their talents instead of one. That way she could have submitted “The Ones” and “Jackie Jormp Jormp”.
