Also, I’m curious to hear your thoughts/rants!

    Matt Says:

Before we start we need to get two things out of the way:

First, I have always thought the Globes were unimportant and overall pretty lame. Even when my favorite shows/movies win I’m never that excited cause it’s just the Globes. Basically it’s 60 something voters, members of the Hollywood Foreign Press, that can’t possibly watch all TV shows/Movies of the year, much less everything nominated. So there’s no way they are at all an authority on anything. They’re only important cause Dick Clark wanted to throw a televised party to make some cash. And now we have the Globes.

Second, yes I’m writing on a 30 Rock site that I in fact run, but today I’m writing as a fan of Comedy in general.

    Ok here we go…

I was talking with Shark Eyes and we pin pointed our problems with the Globes: they go to whoever is hip, edgy new & shinny or controversial. Basically they want to get ratings. They have no obligation to award the best but they try to nominate/award whatever will bring the most eyeballs. (Like Ricky Gervais calling of the HFPA for nominating The Tourist just to get Angelina on the red carpet… cause they totally did.)

The way to win a globe is to swear and show some skin. That’s how you do it. Swearing and nudity over talent. (Ex: David Duchovny over Baldwin a few years ago, Boardwalk Empire.)

Laura Linney: Love her. I do. In good things. “The Big C” is not a good thing. I actually watched this show cause I’m a TV nerd. I thought about quitting after 3 episodes but I stuck it out. Mostly that so when it was over I could say I had watched it and I would be able to bitch about it. I wonder out of the 60 HPFA members how many actually watched it. Probably 7 or 8.

But I did. So I can say: It’s pretty bad. Linney does her best but it’s pretty bad.

I actually have seen all 3 of those Show Time Shows and Linney’s actually the worst. I’d have been more ok with Falco or Collette. But how is Tina they only lady nominated who’s actually on a comedy? Even if you wanted “Dark comedy”, Mary Louise Parker could walk all over those three, but she was snubbed. Amy being excluded for Parks and Rec is extremely shameful too. If you don’t include Amy your awards can’t be taken seriously.

And besides Tina’s speech would have been more funny than Linneys… oh wait Linney didn’t even show up.

At least Lea Michele Didn’t win.

    Oh yes on to Glee…

    Lets start at the beginning.

I knew this category was a bust when “Parks and Rec” “Community” and even “The Office” were passed over for nominations and instead they went to “Glee” and “The Big C.” That just screams “Don’t’ take us seriously!”

I do applaud the HFPA for resisting the urge to nominated “Two and a Half Men.” I’m sure they would have if Charlie Sheen had not gone off the deep end. Thank you Charlie.

So with 3 out of the top 5 Comedies out of the race, I had two left to hope for: 30 Rock or Modern Family.

I get it. 30 Rock’s had it’s turn in the awards spot light. I didn’t even get hopeful this year. (I will again at the Emmys cause they matter.) So last night I was sort of hoping for a Modern Family win. (Modern Family, if you haven’t checked it out, is a perfectly likable and often very funny show. Not as good as 30 Rock but good in it’s own way in it’s own right.) I thought the Globes could meet me half way and go with Modern Family. They proved me wrong.

The Globes eternal quest to look young and hip forced them to award Glee.

    Blurg.

Sure I’ve seen less than 25% of Glee. And perhaps I’m not qualified to make this statement: But that show’s the worst.

I’ve seen “The best episodes” cause I’m an amateur tv critic. I even enjoyed the Pilot. But that shows the worst.

From time to time I’ll check out one of the clips of them performing and or ruining some song that I enjoyed. Occasionally I like it. And by “Occasionally” I mean “not very often.” But as soon as the music cuts all that’s left is a hallow show. Filled in with the same “jokes” over and over again with 0 character growth and dialog that a 7 year old could write.

    For example: Jane Lynch.

Jane Lynch is great at what she does. She should be. She’s been doing the same thing for 20 years. She plays Sue Sylvester on Glee. She played Sue Sylvester in Role Models. She played in Arrested Development. She played Sue Sylvester in a commercial where she’s supposed to be Jane Lynch.

On Glee she says the same offensive line over and over again in the same cold “I don’t care” tone. She has one trick. Therefore she should get one award. Last night it should have been Sofia Vergaras…

But shes a great woman and I’m glad she’s found success. It’s really not her fault the writing gives her nothing new. But let’s not keep awarding a one dimensional role.

Chris Colfer aka “gay kid from Glee.” He seems like a good kid. I’m glad he got his chance to be in the spot light last night cause I swear to god if the Emmys award his “acting” next year… I’ll… be upset.

So there you have it. I have threatened to be upset if Colfer wins an Emmy. It’s your move Emmys.

I’m not that worried cause Emmy voters watch tapes. What? You say that awarded Jon Cryer an Emmy? Ok there is no hope.

Parsons: You know what I can’t complain. Hes at least funny. Better than Baldwin? Nope. But this is probably the HFPA’s best pick of the night TV wise.

I was gonna have things to say about Drama categories but I’m getting tired…

    See ya for the SAGs!

    When are the SAGs?
Matt, I agree with you on most of your points here (except I think sometimes Mod Fam can match and even surpass 30 Rock). I’ve seen every episode of Glee and I like it, but it did not deserve to win over 30 Rock or Modern Family. It has its moments, but the moments in between those good moments are so absurd or weird or stupid that they should negate the good moments in the eyes of voters.
I do have to disagree about Chris Colfer; he’s a great actor, in my opinion. His scenes tend to be more dramatic than funny, which sucks because it’s an entirely different league than someone like Eric Stonestreet, who is hilarious but doesn’t deliver as poignant a portrayal as Colfer simply because he is not given the material. If they were voting on comedy chops alone, not acting in general, it would’ve most definitely gone to Eric Stonestreet. But Colfer is not entirely undeserving of the award.
And yes, why they completely overlooked Parks and Rec and Community is beyond me. They’re better than Glee every time.

Yeah I’ve been told I should watch some “Kurt-centric” episodes to see for real cause I guessed I missed them. I didn’t care about the Globes enough to get caught up so I know what I’m talking about. I’ll for sure watch his Emmy tape so I can be a better judge.

But yeah he seems more adept dramatically. And he’s certainly talented musically. So I really have no problem with him winning a Globe. After all it’s for Best actor in a supporting role. Doesn’t say Comedy.

Most of my favorite Comedy Supporting Actors were looked over anyways. Come Emmy time I’d rather see Nick Offerman, Aziz Ansari, Danny Pudi, Donald Glover, Tracy Morgan, Chris Pratt, Niel Patrick Harris or Rainn Wilson triumph here.

    I agree with Matt.
I was so disappointed 30 Rock didn’t win, and that Parks and Rec didn’t even get nominated. and The Office! The Globes kind of sucked this year.
I miss Tina Fey’s acceptance speeches.

All the Ricky Gervais hate bums me out cause I think what he did was pretty awesome and brave. Celebrities have so many events that are about celebrating how awesome they are, and Ricky rained on their parade a little. The thing is, everything he said was completely true! He was calling everyone out. Viewers loved it because it made what is a pretty tiring, boring ceremony relatively watchable.

And yeah. I don’t like Modern Family as much as 30 Rock but its hilarious too and I hoped/expected it to win. Jane Lynch is awesome but it stinks that she’s most likely got all the awards covered for the next 2/3 years. I would love to see Jane Krakowski win because I think she’s totally underrated and is long overdue for an award. But there are plenty of other supporting ladies that are also deserving; Sophia Vegara, Julie Bowen, Gillian Jacobs…

Anyways, those are my thoughts. And yes, most of all I missed Tina’s speeches.

When the comedy actress category came-up and i saw a nominee from yet another lame, non-comedic cable show in its first year, i thought there’s your winner that’s really a loser.
Matt, you’re gonna love this, saw Jane footage on E.T. or something, when they brought-up her pregnancy she said she got pregnant behind the middle school, and you know what quote that alludes to!

I was initially really bothered by the fact that Laura Linney didn’t accept her award in person, but her fathered died so she was not present. I don’t think we can take anything away from her. She is an amazing actress, and I think anyone on the 30 Rock cast would completely agree. I am extremely frustrated that Jane has not been nominated or won anything for Jenna. That character is like none other seen today or before. I really hope to see her get the recognition she deserves. Jane Lynch is an amazing actress just look at what she’s done with all those Guest films.

Most everything about the Golden Globes made me angry, but their being glitzy and shallow is nothing new.
Chris Colfer did not deserve to win over David Strathairn and Eric Stonestreet. He is so overrated just because of the subject matter and the hype. He’s not a bad actor and is clearly quite talented, but he is not the remarkable, ground-breaking actor everyone is making him out to be, and his portrayal of Kurt is far less award-worthy than the portrayals of the other actors.
If he wins the SAG Award over Alec Baldwin and the others, the SAGs will have officially stooped to the lowest as well…appeasing hype instead of rewarding substance.
And Glee is just a joke, period.

And I also think that Jane Krakowski and Jack McBrayer are both long overdue for award recognition.

    Maddie Says:

I would like to see musicals removed from the comedy category, because sometimes, there is absolutely nothing funny about them. Musicals, in both the movie and television categories, should have to compete directly with dramas if they lean more towards the dramatic. Also, half hour programs should not automatically be assumed to be comedies. This stereotype that award programs have means that quality programs that are actually comedies have a harder time getting some recognition.
