Baldwin Says Season 6 is Last
April 6, 2011
Update: Alec has taken to the internet to clear up his earlier statement: “Gosh. I want to take the opportunity to state that although my days on network TV may be numbered, I hope 30 Rock goes on forever. Or at least as long as everyone involved desires. Next year hopefully won’t be the last. Kenneth can run the network. Jenna will get her own talk show. Tracy will become Mayor of New York. Then resign to go raise exotic reptiles. And Lemon will go do … just about anything she sets her mind to. Here’s to five more seasons.” Vulture is reporting that Baldwin made a bold statement during a gala benefit last night: “I will tell you one thing,” he said. “And that is our show next year is our last year of the show.” Though Baldwin has made no secret of the fact that he plans to leave 30 Rock in 2012, this was the first time we’ve heard that the show itself would close up shop, too. But Baldwin says it’s a done deal that Fey will be leaving. “Our contracts are expired [in 2012], and Tina is gonna have a big career directing films and writing. She’s going to be the next Elaine May. She’ll be great.” Reps for Fey and the show declined to comment. This may be the first public announcement, but we fans have seen it coming for quite awhile. Tina’s always said she wants to leave on top. Alec as certainly never hidden the fact he wants to persue other interests. When 30 Rock got picked up so early for a season 6 it just about confirmed it for me. A final season deal must have been made. Sure it’s sad but a show ending on its creator and stars terms rather than the networks is truly a rare gift these days. It shows the respect Tina has in the industry. Personally I think the writers and Tina have a lot more show in them, but if they feel one more season is best then they know better than I. I’ll miss having this show every week, but they had a great run to revisit time and time again. Here’s to a phenomenal remaining 26 episodes! How do you guys feel? Of course none of this is official. An NBC insider insists no talks to end the show are taking place. Posted in Alec Baldwin, Season 6 |

Quite conflicted. Like you said, it’s great that the show’s ending at Tina and Alec’s discretion. But obviously as a fan, it is sad news. I don’t know, so far I’m taking this with a grain of salt. I won’t believe it until I hear it from Tina herself.

Thankfully, there seem to be conflicting reports about the fate of the show…

If I’m honest, I’d like to see this show go out on top. While I’ll miss it when it’s gone, it’s better than way than if I was just thankful it had finally been put out of its misery.
Alec Baldwin has made it clear that he wants to leave anyway in 2012, and if the show is to continue without him, I think they will find him Jack Donaghy a very difficult character to replace.
I’m not saying the show couldn’t be funny without Jack, but history has more often than not taught us that losing a major (and very popular) character can have a negative effect. The show is likely to face fan backlash, even lower ratings, etc.
And the worst bit is, a lot of fans will probably say they’re alright with Jack leaving, as long as ’30 Rock’ can stay on. However, once they go ahead and actually do it (a la Scrubs), those same fans will be outraged.
It’s up to Tina at the end of the day, and I hope NBC don’t make it difficult (you know what network execs can be like). However, as somebody who loves the show to bits, I’d much rather see it go out on top (and it still is on top, I tend to ignore the ‘jumped the shark’ naysayers) than kept around after its time.

If the show ends, I’m gonna take a bunch of pills and it’s gonna be your fault!
Just kidding. To be serious, I’ll be really upset if it finishes, but I’ve always known it’d have to and I’d rAther it did it while ahead.
The show just wouldn’t work without Alec, so I kind of hope it ends with him.

Is this supposed to be a secret or something? They renewed the show for Season 6 WAY WAY EARLY. That’s the first sign that contract negotiations are over.
