Update #4 It appears Tracy is really working on this. Meeting with GLAAD and gay youth is the way to go here, those are the people he hurt and needs to work with. I’m glad he’s putting effort in it, and opening up about his father and his won bullying is a good place to start. Obviously he still needs to do a lot more but I’m glad he’s taking it seriously.
Update: #3: Apology #2. Much better this time, seems like Tracy instead of his PR people.
Update #2: Here are Tina’s and NBC’s statement.
“The violent imagery of Tracy’s rant was disturbing to me at a time when homophobic hate crimes continue to be a life-threatening issue for the GLBT Community.”
“It also doesn’t line up with the Tracy Morgan I know, who is not a hateful man and is generally much too sleepy and self-centered to ever hurt another person.
“I hope for his sake that Tracy’s apology will be accepted as sincere by his gay and lesbian co-workers at ’30 Rock’, without whom Tracy would not have lines to say, clothes to wear, sets to stand on, scene partners to act with, or a printed-out paycheck from accounting to put in his pocket.”
I think it’s something that 30 Rock fans should be aware of so unfortunately I have to write about it. A man who attended Tracy Morgan’s stand up show in Tennessee wrote on his facebook about how Tracy went on a homophobic tirade during the show. So far there aren’t many details and no account beyond the facebook post, but it sounds pretty terrible. Tracy’s manager says he’ll make a statement shortly. We forgive stars a lot, but if this turns out to be true and he wasn’t joking, I don’t know how he can be forgiven. People are predicting he’ll loose his job, but ultimately it will be up to NBC and Tina Fey to make that decision. I know you may loose all your respect for Tracy after this and he may deserve the backlash that’s coming. However, I still hope it doesn’t affect the show. There are still 200+ people who work on this show who don’t share his views. It is not fair to Tina and the crew that they have to deal with this.
Update: Not that it will help too much but here’s his apology.
