The GE Sells NBC Post

December 3, 2009

Note: This is a post for discussing the facts but mostly to speculate on what the Comcast/GE deal means for NBC and “30 Rock.”  Please feel free to share your comments.

It was announced today after weeks of working out the details, that Comcast has purchased a controlling share of NBC from General Electrics.

Facts:
Comcast owns 51% of NBC, GE owns 49%.
Jeff Zucker will lead the venture.
For a lot more specifics check out:  Comcast’s reportNBCU’s siteGE’s Report.

Speculation:
So what does this mean for 30 Rock?  Jack Donaghy is a GE employee, so how can the show justify his character?  Do they need to?

Great questions that can really only be answered by Tina and the writers.  It’s really up to them to let this play out in “30 Rock’s world however they want.  I don’t think there’s any reason or need to boot Jack Donaghy from his job, (much less the show.)  But they could if they wanted to.  This could work creatively for them.  Maybe they’ll give Jack story lines of being unemployed or struggling with the take over.  Maybe he’ll stay on as VP of Programing under Comcast.  Could Devon Banks be a Comcast exec?

Personally, I’m not a fan of this deal, but it could give 30 Rock some great stories.  Speculate away!

I’m not a fan either. I was very disappointed when News Corp. bought Dow Jones, and I feel similarly about this deal. Despite using Comcast Internet to make this comment, I just really don’t like the company.

An easy one: Sheinhardt Wigs owns BOTH GE and Comcast.
